Size/Form: |
Australian pine is a large evergreen tree reaching 150’ in height, with an irregular crown. |
Leaves: |
Leaves are needle-like with small ridges. The grayish green leaves form branchlets reaching 4 to 8” in length. The leaves are composed of small scales with six to eight in whorls encircling joints of branches. |
Fruit: |
Samaras are formed in cone-like woody, brown clusters, ¾” by ½”. |
Bark: |
Rough reddish brown to gray bark that often peels. |
Habitat: |
Australian pine is salt and shade tolerant. It grows in pinelands and along the sandy coastline. Commonly found in disturbed areas, it reproduces prolifically by seed. |
