Size/Form: |
Black walnut is a medium tree that reaches the height of 98 to 130'. It has an open, spreading crown. The root system is wide-spreading and deep. |
Leaves: |
The leaves are alternate, deciduous, and pinnately compound. They generally have fourteen to twenty-two leaflets on a central stalk 47" long. Leaflets are ovate-lanceolate, growing 3 to 4" in length and 1" wide.The middle leaflets are larger than those at either end of the leaf, with the terminal leaflet either small or missing. The top of the leaflet is smooth and yellowish-green while the underside has hairs. The leaflet margins are serrate. |
Fruit: |
A round, globular nut, up to 2" wide with the shell surface having ridged edges. They are found in clusters of one to three. The nut is enclosed in a thick, slightly hairy, yellow-green husk. |
Bark: |
Light brown and scaly when young. As the tree matures the color becomes a dark gray-brown to almost black with rounded intersecting ridges. The inside of the ridges is chocolate brown. |
Habitat: |
Intolerant of shade, it commonly is found on well-drained, fertile lowlands. Found by itself or with other hardwood species. |
