 Identifying Characteristics
Size/Form:
Silver maple is a large tree reaching 114’ in height. Rounded crown.
Leaves:
Palmate leaves have five to seven lobes. Opposite, simple, and deciduous. Leaves are 6 to 8” long with a coarsely serrate margin. Silvery-white underside with light green on the surface.
Fruit:
Double samara with divergent wings, 1 to 3” long.
Bark:
Young trees have gray, smooth bark. Mature trees have dark reddish-brown bark with narrow, lose, silver gray plates.
Habitat:
Somewhat shade tolerant. Prefers rich, moist bottomlands bordering streams, swamps, and lakeshores.
