| Identifying Characteristics | |
Size/Form: |
White Oak is a large tree reaching 80 to 150’ in height. An open crown with gnarled and twisted wide-spreading branches. |
Leaves: |
Leaves are simple, deciduous, and alternate. Leaves are longer than they are wide measuring 5’ by 3’. Seven to nine rounded lobes per leaf. Entire margin sometimes showing a couple of teeth. Underside is pale and smooth with a yellow midrib. In the autumn the leaves turn dull red or orange. |
Fruit: |
Acorn is about ¾” long, globular, and yellow to light brown. The thick scaled, warty cup is bowl-shaped. |
Bark: |
Gray-white to gray-brown with shallow grooves and small rectangular scales. The bark becomes deeply grooved at the base of the tree. |
Habitat: |
Found on a variety of well-drained sites. Moderately shade-tolerant and grows well in an open stand. |
