2006-2007 Gordon and Betty Moore Graduate Scholarships for

Tropical F orestConservation in the Andes-Amazon Region

The Tropical Conservation and Development (TCD) Program and the School of Forest Resources and Conservation at the University of Florida (UF) announce a competition for the Gordon and Betty Moore Graduate Scholarships to support Master's and Doctoral level study in tropical forest conservation of the Andes-Amazon region by residents of Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Peru, Suriname, and Venezuela.

Awards consist of a stipend of up to $15,000 for each year of study at UF, plus the cost of tuition and fees. Additional funds for travel to and from the University of Florida, health insurance, and participation in field courses are also included. Moore Scholars will also have the opportunity to apply for field research grants. Limited financial support is available to improve existing English language skills prior to enrollment in a graduate program.

Applicants will be judged according to their academic record, previous related work experience, career goals, leadership potential, and commitment to tropical forest conservation. Additionally, applicants should demonstrate the relevance of their proposed research and course of study to one of the following themes:

. protected area management,

. regional planning and policy,

. sustainable forest management, and

. community-based natural resource management.

Recipients will be required to participate in TCD Program activities and to complete the requirements of the TCD interdisciplinary concentration as part of their degree program. Details on the TCD concentration can be found online at: http://www.latam.ufl.edu/tcd/prs.html.

Moore Scholarships are made possible by a grant from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation.

 

ELIGIBILITY

To apply for a Moore Scholarship, you must:

. Reside in Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Peru, Suriname, or Venezuela.

. Apply or already be admitted to a UF graduate degree program in a department affiliated with the TCD program. A list of TCD's affiliate departments can be viewed online at: http://www.latam.ufl.edu/tcd/prs/about.html.  

 

APPLICATION MATERIALS

The following application materials are required:

. Moore Scholarship application form.

. A letter of support from faculty advisor or department Graduate Coordinator at UF.

. Two letters of recommendation.

. A two page statement of purpose explaining your plans for graduate training at UF and why you should be considered for a Moore Scholarship. Include details about your research interests in Amazon conservation with particular reference to the program's four thematic areas, as well as career goals and related work experience.

. Curriculum vitae.

. Originals or photocopies of academic transcripts from all colleges and universities attended, Graduate Record Exam (GRE) scores, and Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores.

Please note that the application for a Moore Scholarship is only for financial assistance. Applicants must also apply for admission to a graduate degree program in their department of interest. Contact the particular department for more information.

To be eligible for the English course available prior to enrollment in a degree program, applicants must obtain a TOEFL score of at least 190 points.
