Reforestation

Efficiently reforesting the acres that are being
used for timber production is a key way to meet the future demand for wood
products and other uses and reduce the pressure on other lands such as
wetlands. Yet, the average survival for seedlings planted in Florida on
reforestation sites over several decades has been 67%. And non-industrial
private landowners who own 47% of Florida's forest land only reforest one
out of every four acres they harvest. Unsuccessful reforestation means
that either these acres will remain understocked or that they must be replanted
causing a regeneration delay. New technology to improve seedling quality
and reforestation success is often immediately applied by forest industry
in their nurseries and planting sites. And improved tree seedling quality
also results in higher quality seedlings for non-industrial private landowners
to plant on their lands. Educational programs directed at non-industrial
private landowners carry new planting technology to improve reforestation
success.
