NSF-SBE Doctoral Dissertation Research Improvement Grants

Organization Limit: The student must be enrolled at a U.S. academic institution, but need not be a U.S. citizen. Proposals from women, minorities, and persons with disabilities are strongly encouraged. PIEligibility Limit: The proposal must be submitted by the dissertation advisor(s) on behalf of the graduate student who is at the point of initiating or already conducting dissertation research.

These grants provide funds for items not normally available through the student's university. Additionally, these grants allow doctoral students to undertake significant data-gathering projects and to conduct field research in settings away from their campus that would not otherwise be possible.

The National Science Foundation's Division of Behavioral and Cognitive Sciences (BCS) and Division of Social and Economic Sciences (SES) award grants to doctoral students to improve the quality of dissertation research. The following Programs support dissertation research:

NSF-Doctoral Dissertation Improvement Grants in the Directorate for Biological Sciences (DDIG)

 A student must have advanced to candidacy for a Ph.D and must be enrolled at a U.S. institution, but need not be a U.S. citizen.
An organization may submit only one proposal per student in a given year. Organizations should limit proposals to outstanding dissertation proposals with unusual financial requirements that cannot be met otherwise.

Grants are typically awarded for periods up to 24 months and for amounts up to $12,000. Allowed are costs for doctoral candidates to conduct research in specialized facilities or field settings away from the home campus, to participate in scientific meetings, and to provide opportunities for greater diversity in collecting and creativity in analyzing data than would otherwise be possible using only locally available resources.

The National Science Foundation awards Doctoral Dissertation Improvement Grants in selected areas of the biological sciences. Proposals whose focus falls within the scope of any cluster in the Division of Environmental Biology (DEB) or in the scientific area of animal behavior supported by the Behavioral Systems Cluster in the Division of Integrative Organismal Biology (IOB) are eligible. Please note that DEB programs generally do not support research in marine ecology.

EPA STAR

The STAR fellowship program is open for applications from any U.S. citizen or permanent resident alien who is currently attending or plans to attend graduate school at an accredited U.S. college or university, or in a U.S. territory.

Tuition and academic fees, up to $12,000 per year. Monthly stipend for $1,667 paid directly to fellow. And an additional $5,000 for educational expenses (e.g., health insurance, books, supplies or travel to scientific meetings) that will be managed by the University.

The applicant's research must be in an environmentally related field.

Wenner-Gren Foundation

Dissertation and Post-Ph.D. grants

Grants for amounts up to $25,000

Anthropological Research Dissertation Fieldwork are available for basic research in all branches of anthropology.The foundation particularly invites projects employing comparative perspectives or integrating two or more subfields of anthropology.

Kleinhans

Applications for any tropical forest type are eligible. The successful applicant will have a master's degree in forestry, ecology, botany, environmental science or an appropriate related field. Doctoral candidates or post-doctoral researchers are preferred. Applicants may substitute relevant experience for degrees.

The fellowship provides a grant of $15,000 per year, for two years. The Fellowship will not subsidize academic tuition and fees, nor will it cover costs of purchasing transport vehicles, or unnecessary or unreasonable equipment.

Supports research to better understand and improve the impacts of non-timber forest product (NTFP) harvest and marketing on rural livelihoods and tropical forest ecosystems. A successful application will outline the need for research, its potential applications and its likely impact on local communities and forest ecosystems. Applications for projects conducted in the Petén region of Guatemala or Southern Mexico are especially encouraged.

NSEP (Boren Fellowship)

U.S. graduate students

Fellowships provide support for overseas or domestic study, or a combination of both. The maximum award for overseas study is $12,000 per semester for up to two semesters. A maximum of $12,000 is available for a program of domestic study only. The maximum level of support for a combined overseas and domestic program is $30,000. Requires a minimum of a year of service in the Departments of Defense, Homeland Security, State, or in the Intelligence Community after fellowship completion.

Boren Fellowships support students pursuing the study of languages, cultures, and world regions that are critical to U.S. national security but are less frequently studied by U.S. graduate students, and who are highly motivated by the opportunity to work in the federal government.

NASA Graduate Student Researchers Program (GSRP)

Applicants must be U.S. citizens and must be currently enrolled or accepted as a full-time graduate student in an accredited U.S. college or university.

Fellowships are awarded for one year as training grants in the amount of $24,000. This amount includes an $18,000 student stipend, a student allowance of $3,000, and a $3,000 university allowance. Awards are renewable up to three years based on satisfactory academic advancement, research progress, and available funding.

Awards fellowships for graduate study leading to masters or doctoral degrees in the fields of science, mathematics, and engineering related to NASA research and development.

Richard E. Schultes Award

The award is to be presented annually to students or young professionals (that have 5 years or less of post-doctoral experience) and who are members of the Society of Economic Botany for conducting field research.

Annual research award(s) of up to $2500

Pay the costs of field work on a topic related to economic botany. Applicants will be judged by an ad-hoc committee of Society members and awards will be granted by June 30 each year. Recipients are expected to submit a manuscript based upon their proposed research for publication in Economic Botany.

American Association of University Women

Dissertation Fellowships are available to women who will complete their dissertation writing between July 1, 2006, and June 30, 2007. To qualify, applicants must have completed all course work, passed all required preliminary examinations, and received approval for their research proposal or plan by Nov. 15, 2005. Students holding any fellowship for writing a dissertation in the year prior to the AAUW Educational Foundation fellowship year are not eligible.
