Northern bobwhite

The northern bobwhite is a type of quail and has the plump, rounded body characteristic of that group. It generally stays close to the ground, feeding on seeds and small insects. The bird's coloration can make it difficult to spot in the undergrowth, but it has a loud and very recognizable call of "bob-WHITE" or "bob-bob-WHITE." When disturbed by humans, the bird will first freeze and try to remain undetected, but it may later burst into flight. Hikers in late summer and fall can sometimes disturb small flocks of the birds that will fly out of the undergrowth together.
