Janaki Alavalapati is a Professor of Forest Resource Economics and Policy with the School of Forest Resources and Conservation (SFRC). He is also a Research Foundation Professor and an affiliate faculty member in the Food and Resource Economics Department, School of Natural Resources and Environment, and the Center for Latin American Studies at the University of Florida. His research focuses on exploring market solutions for natural resources, energy, and environmental problems/issues at local, regional, and international level.

Before joining the SFRC/UF in 1998, he worked as a Forest Officer in the State of Andhra Pradesh, India; a Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Alberta; and a Resource Economist at the Canadian Forest Service.

Dr. Alavalapati serves as a member of the editorial of Forest Policy and Economics journal, Deputy Coordinator, Social and Economic Aspects of Forestry Unit, International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO), the elected chair of Economics, Policy, and Law Working Group of the Society of American Foresters (SAF), a member of the Policy and Legislative Committee of the Florida SAF, and a member of the Steering Committee of Southern Forest Economics Workshop (SOFEW).

He served as an Associate Editor of Forest Science and Canadian Journal of Forest Research journals; a Book Editor for Forest Science; a Guest Editor for Forest Policy and Economics; and a member of the editorial board of Agroforestry Systems. He served as a consultant to the Forest Management Trust and Chemonics International, Inc. (USA) and the International Institute for Environment and Development (UK).

Awards/honors:

  • Jefferson Science Fellow 2007-2008; currently serving as a Senior Advisor for International Energy Affairs at the U.S. Department of State, Washington, DC.
  • University of Florida Research Foundation Professorship 2006-2009
  • Stephen Spurr Award for technical contributions to Forestry in Florida by the Florida Division of the Society of American Foresters 2005.
  • Graduate Teacher & Adviser of 2003-2004, College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, University of Florida.
  • University of Alberta PhD scholarship for 1990-92
  • T.W. Manning prize for 1991-92 & 1988-89, University of Alberta
