Research

My research focuses on advancement and application of the ecological sciences to support conservation of neotropical ecosystems through sustainable use.  I emphasize research applications for community-based forest management systems, distinguishing my lab because few ecological research programs target this neglected stakeholder group. To better understand the broader cultural and socioeconomic context in which communities manage their forest resources, I also integrate social science concepts and methods into my research agenda.  Specific project objectives include:

  • To quantify the population viability and interspecific interactions of select non-timber species, with a focus on Bertholletia excelsa (Brazil nut);
  • To test silvicultural options to intensify tropical forest management and increase timber and non-timber outputs; and
  • To develop and analyze community-based innovations for sustainable management of tropical forests.
