Lab Mission

The mission of the Kobziar Fire Science Lab is to conduct research and disseminate critical information regarding fire's impacts on vegetation and ecosystem dynamics, the prediction of fire behavior and effects, and the efficacy of fuels treatments (prescribed burning, mechanical reductions) as examined cooperatively by both graduate and undergraduate student researchers under my supervision.  It is my hope that our Lab will produce meaningful results with applicability to management decision-making, will increase our understanding of fire’s fundamental ecological roles, and will improve fire use and mitigate undesirable repercussions of wildfires.  Although fire is the driving force in maintaining the majority of Florida’s ecosystems, the Lab serves as Florida’s only research unit specifically devoted to Fire Science, and as such, we strive to become the “go-to” source for research on fire in the State and beyond.

As an Assistant Professor of fire science and forest conservation at the University of Florida, I am committed to conducting research which not only advances the science of fire, but also helps support the sustainable management and conservation of forested ecosystems.  This research informs and furthers my ability to provide leadership in teaching upper division fire science, fire ecology, and forest conservation courses, and in mentoring graduate and undergraduate students towards fulfilling their career aspirations.
