Identification and Assessment of Conservation Compatible Practices on Private Forestlands

 Project Overview

We propose to achieve this task in three phases through active collaboration of six other key conservation organizations in Florida. In Phase I, we conduct focus group with key stakeholders to define and identify conservation compatible forest practices on NIPF lands under SHCA plan. An Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) will be employed to process the focus group information. In this phase we will also develop an inventory of incentives available to NIPF landowners to adopt these practices. In Phase II, a survey of NIPF landowners in SHCA will be conducted to generate information about their dominant objective of land use, perceptions about conservation practices and programs, and associated costs and benefits. In Phase III, information collected from the above two phases will be integrated to conduct environmental economic analysis of conservation compatible forest practices and predict NIPF landowner choice towards these practices.

The anticipated outcomes of this project include:

  • A framework to identify, assess, and further conservation compatible practices on NIPF lands
  • A matrix of compatible management practices consistent with Florida’s SHCA plan.
  • A model to understand and predict NIPF landowner behavior toward the adoption of conservation compatible forest practices.
  • A comprehensive report detailing the current and potential NIPF areas and practices that would be compatible with Florida’s SHCA plan.

The results of the project will be disseminated through channels such as journal publications, professional meetings, and scientific conferences as well as through electronic and web-based mediums. Collaborators of this project would further facilitate the dissemination of results. Copies of all project outputs and outreach materials will be delivered to the NCSSF.
