Shadeville Elementary in Crawfordville
PLT School Coordinator: Michelle Hunter
During this year's PLT Week, the theme was “Global Trek”. Topics presented in classes throughout the week focused on the diversity of habitats, organisms, societies, technologies, and cultures.
A “PLT Corner” has been added to the school’s parent newsletter to provide examples of what the students are being taught through PLT, the connection between PLT and student learning, and an open invitation to parents to volunteer at the school when PLT activities are occurring for them to see first hand the “teaching students how to think, not what to think” approach of PLT materials. Additionally, the PLT School Committee created a PLT brochure for parents to explain the use of PLT in the classroom.
School coordinators publish The Leaflet for PLT updates and ideas throughout the year. A yearly scrapbook is kept including photos of the students participating in activities throughout the year, faculty and community partners interacting with students during hands-on presentations, and samples of student work.
National Project Learning Tree®, the environmental education program of the American Forest Foundation, named Michelle Hunter, a 2007 National Outstanding Educator of the Year. In addition, she received the Barb Pittman Award for Environmental Education Excellence also awarded by National PLT. Congrats Michelle!
