MS Graduate Assistantship

Gulfport MS imageA fully funded Master’s position is available to model the effect of urban forest cover on tree debris and home damage due to hurricanes in the southern US.  This research is funded by the USDA Forest Service, and is needed to guide urban and community forest management and prepare communities and emergency management agencies for future storm events.  Our goal is to develop a model for damage based on the proximity of urban trees and severity of windstorm events. Urban forest cover, type and density, and windspeed data will be the main indices in the model.  Methods will capitalize on existing urban forest structure and previously collected post-hurricane data from the region and publicly available climate data. The successful applicant will join the graduate program in the School of Forest Resources and Conservation at the University of Florida.  Desirable qualifications in the applicant include a degree in Forestry, Natural Resources, or Environmental Science.  A strong interest in urban forests and forest biometrics is highly desired.  Consideration of applications begins immediately and will continue until the position is filled.

Please send a cover letter that states your research interests and provides the names and contact information for three references, your curriculum vitae, and any other relevant materials by email to Dr. Christie Staudhammer or Dr. Francisco Escobedo, School of Forest Resources and Conservation, University of Florida/IFAS, Gainesville, Fl 32611-0410.
