Working Forests in the Tropics
2008 Summer Field Research Grants
The Working Forests in the Tropics Program at the University of Florida, an Integrated Graduate Education and Research Traineeship Program (IGERT) supported by the National Science Foundation, annually awards small grants to promote doctoral student research in tropical working forests. Awards will be made for proposals that explicitly address the program's umbrella research question and one or more of its 6 research themes. Overall research question: At scales from the individual to the international, how do biophysical and societal contexts influence what working forests can contribute to tropical conservation and development?
All tropical regions are eligible. Preference will be given to proposals for research carried out in collaboration with WFT partner institutions in the program's regional focus areas: Lowland Bolivia; Acre, Brazil; Eastern Amazonia, Brazil; and the tri-national Maya Forest (Belize, Guatemala, Mexico). We recommend that potential applicants contact the UF regional coordinators to facilitate contact with in-country partners: Bolivia - Jack Putz; Acre - Marianne Schmink; Eastern Amazon - Dan Zarin; Maya Forest - Rick Stepp. We anticipate making five awards of up to $3000 each.
